YMCA Youth Leader Corps

Since 1884, the YMCA has been training the leaders of the future. YMCA Youth Leader Corps programs are designed to help participants build skills that they can use for a lifetime! The program aims to provide a sense of responsibility for the well-being of others and a sound foundation of formal and supervised in-service training that prepares youth for future volunteer and employment opportunities.

YMCA Youth Leader Corps Programs feature three components:

Values Based Leadership Training - skills such as communication, event organization, and teaching.

Volunteerism - opportunities to take part in service learning projects, learning goals, and group activities.

Self-Government - participants will identify their own projects, learning goals, and group activities.

In addition, participants will have opportunities to take part in area wide, provincial and national YMCA Leader Corps programs.

The Leader Corps Experience

The Leader Corps experience is hard to beat! Spending time with friends, trying new activities and having a great time is what Leader Corps is all about.

Our Youth Leader Corps participants work very closely within a group of their peers and a staff advisor. Together, they learn how to work as a team, set goals and plan together, become involved in the community, and discover ways to make a difference in the lives of others. Through involvement in the program, our leaders usually learn a great deal about working with and getting along with others. More importantly, in time, our leaders begin to understand themselves and their own individual strengths and weaknesses.

YMCA Youth Leader Corps is an opportunity to build skills, friendships and experiences that truly last a lifetime!

Participants Expectations

Youth Leader Corps participants are expected to be representatives of the YMCA. This responsibility requires participation in key YMCA events and conducting oneself in a manner reflecting the position as a role model for YMCA participants and others in the community.

The Programs

Jr. Leaders (10 to 13 years)
Meet new friends, learn new skills, and have fun in the process! Each week, Jr Leaders will participate in games and activities designed to build confidence and enhance self esteem.

Leaders (14 to 17 years)
In this unique values-based leadership training program, teens will learn more about themselves and others as they participate in challenging activities, exciting adventures, and various initiative problems. Youth are challenged to develop their leadership and planning skills in various environments.

Leader Corps programs are offered at all three YMCA of Niagara Branch locations. For exact program days and times, please follow these links to the program schedules:
